The Future is on its way
It is often forgotten that volunteers keep many organisations going. From England Netball through to your local netball team, club or league, it’s the volunteers that keep netball moving.

I had never given any thought as to where these netball volunteers came from or how they acquired the skills they needed for the roles they undertake................

Heinz and Campbell…. Combined the two will give you enough of a high-fibre diet that you will have regular bowel motions and increased flatulence. Heinz baked beans tend to be flavoured with imitation spicy tomatoes and have rubbery projectile shaped nodules which are supposedly a legume. Campbell soup is an additive enriched, gloopy mixture with innocuous tasting lumps which are guaranteed to remain in your digestive tract for months, marketed as minestrone. But why am I rabbiting on about baked beans and soup?

There was an interesting thread in the Chit Chat section of the forum this weekend about a Coach who was trying to do the best for her team, only to come up against the worst opposition possible……. A disgruntled parent. Forget about one-eyed umpires, the opposition playing mind-games, blind time-keepers and dodgy courts, field and equipment. In my opinion, parents can make or break the spirit of a player and/or team. I’ve seen it first hand and I can’t say that I’ve ever seen a child improve because of the negative attention of a side-line parent.

My Apologies people…. There’ll be no words of wisdom or pearls of advice from me this week. Instead I am up to my elbows in washing, boiling lemonade and making jellies for sick children. For the past 36 hours I have been attempting to stay cool, calm and collected whilst dealing with two sick children, one of whom has never been sick before and screams blue bloody murder every time she vomits – obviously thinking that her insides are working their way outside her body. Quite frankly – she’s terrified every time she’s sick. What I’m struggling to understand is how a mouthful of water can be turned into a 5 minute retching session.

Thousands of netball fans will be gutted if the Trans Tasman Test Series between New Zealand and Australia doesn’t go ahead next month. Most of them have already made travel and accommodation bookings to one of the main centres so they could cheer on their team to victory. Some fans from Australia are simply coming over to watch one test… others to follow the team to all three tests… and still more are incorporating a holiday into their itinerary. And yet, despite the possibility that the test may not go ahead because of the Australian Players refusing to sign their contracts with Netball Australia, the majority of fans (even those who stand to be out of pocket by substantial amounts of money) are behind the players. And no wonder….

North versus South…. East meets West…. City against City… the Netball Provincial Championships are here again, though now renamed the Scottwood Trust Netball Champs. For me the provincial champs have always been the core of the netball year. It’s where the youngsters from the provinces get a chance to shine, to share the court with the ‘superstars’ of the sport, and where their talent is often recognised and nurtured by other coaches and teams. It’s not unheard of for a previously unknown netballer to be noticed during the champs…

I have to admit that I haven’t really been following the Australian Commonwealth Bank Trophy competition. Not because it doesn’t interest me – but because the enjoyment I get from reading about each game, is seriously counteracted by the frustration of not being able to watch the games! On that note, I’ve suddenly become aware that I’ve passed a serious genetic disorder onto my children, as they sulk when they can’t get what they want too!
